We raise tadpoles/frogs and caterpillars/butterflies in the classroom. Have never tried ladybugs. Does this work well? I've heard their change isn't drastic enough, but I'd love to try them.

You heard correctly. They are not good for seeing an actual life cycle. You can only observe them as adults.
