Getting Ready to Build Stamina

Here is what I did over the last three days for the Daily Five...

1) reviewed the anchor chart "Three Ways to Read a Book" repeatedly
2) read and reread several books and practiced retelling a story we already know and looking at the pictures and telling a story as a whole class
3) learned how to "lean and tell" and "turn and talk" with a partner
4) introduced my chime wand for bringing students back to the carpet in between rotations 
5) taught mini-lessons on how to hold books, turn the pages, and take care of our books

In preparation for starting to build stamina next week I wanted to make sure my students had a clear understanding of the three ways to read a book and how to take care of the books in their book box. 

Over the course of the last several days I read and reread several books to my class. After the second read we practiced retelling the story because we already knew it and used the pictures to help us. I held the book up and turned the pages one at a time while I called on different students to retell what happened on each page. When needed I provided students with prompts and asked questions to help get them thinking about what happened. 

These two books were favorites this week. 


We practiced how to "lean and tell" and "turn and talk" with our elbow partners. When I want students to share a one or two word response I have them lean and tell. When I want them to share something more then that I have them turn and talk. 

Our anchor chart came from Kim Adsit's Blasting Off With Reader's Workshop unit. 

We practiced reading then putting our books back in the basket and returning to the carpet when we heard the chime. I had to be secretly excited about the students who ignored the chime because they did not want to stop reading their books :) For more information on what the sisters say about signaling click here

We learned how to hold books correctly, turn the pages carefully, and put our books away. We also learned about the book hospital and when we need to put books in it. 

First we learned about taking care of books. Then we made an anchor chart to help us remember what we talked about (this anchor chart came from Blasting Off With Reader's Workshop). I demonstrated the right way and the wrong way to hold a book and turn the pages. I had students give me a thumbs up when I did it correctly and a thumbs down when I did it incorrectly (this idea came from Blasting off with Reader's Workshop). Then we practiced holding books correctly and turning the pages carefully. 




We spent two days learning how to take care of books and practicing in small groups. I grouped students by their table color and put them in various places around the room. Then I gave each group a basket of books to practice with. 


I used the book Maybe a Bear Ate It! to talk about how to take care of our books. The different pages in the book were a great springboard for talking about how we do not sit on our books, we do not put them in our mouth, we do not lay them all over the floor because they may get stepped on, and we do not put food and drinks around them. 

I placed familiar stories and books we read this week in the baskets. I wanted to make sure students could practice reading a book by retelling a story they already knew. I also put books about popular characters in the basket- Froggy, Clifford, Curious George, etc. 

I got their book boxes ready for next week. I am starting with three books per student. To get started I chose three "look" books for each student. Once again I used familiar reads, fairy tales, popular characters, and books we read this week.

My hope is that by spending so much time now modeling and practicing the three ways to read a book and how to take care of books we will be able to build stamina smoother and faster.

Retell a Story You Already Know

Today we reviewed the two ways to read a book that we talked about yesterday.

I modeled looking at the pictures and telling the story again by reading Have You Seen My Duckling. On each page I stopped and had students tell me what they noticed in the picture, what was happening, and how they could tell. 
Then I introduced the third way to read a book- retell a story you already know. We read The Kissing Hand yesterday and we read it again today so I modeled retelling that story with my students. I had them help me retell it. 
Then a student and I modeled how to sit together and read a familiar book by retelling it. Then I partnered students and gave them a familiar fairy tale to practice. I used The Three Little Pigs, The Three Little Bears, and The Gingerbread Man because I knew these were all books most of my students would be familiar with. 

 
This is what I learned... about half of my students were able to retell a story they already knew, others tried but struggled with it, and two boys said they did not know how to read. So... we are going to continue to practice the three ways to read together as a group. I am going to reread some of the read alouds from my lessons over the next few days and have us practice retelling the story after we are familiar with it.

Signals and Check-in

In the daily five book the sisters talk about getting your student's attention in a calm and respectful manner in order not to break the tone you are trying to set with the daily five. Once your students are rolling along and have built up stamina the last thing on their mind will be stopping and checking in.

In the book the sisters suggest using a set of chimes to signal your students back to the meeting area for check-in. They say the balanced melody of chimes is different enough to grab the attention of your kinesthetic children while unobtrusive enough to not upset your auditory learners.

I purchased a chime wand from Music Wands to use when signaling my students back for check-in. You lightly tap it against something and it chimes. It is perfect! The wands come in a wide variety of shapes and you can't beat the price.
Don't forget to introduce your signal to your students before using it. Make an anchor chart for what it will look and sound like when you use the signal. 

The First Day of Daily Five

Here is how our first day using the daily five went...

I told students there were three ways to read a book. Then I asked them if they could name them. They easily came up with "read the words" and "look at the pictures." These are actually the only ways I talked about today. I am saving "retell the story" for tomorrow.

First we read the wordless picture book Pancakes for Breakfast. On each page I pointed out details and asked questions that helped my students tell the story. Every few pages I reminded my students that we were reading the book by looking at the pictures. They loved this!

Then we read the book Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten. Once again I reviewed that we can read books by looking at the pictures and by reading the words. Miss Bindergarten is perfect for both ways because all of the pictures go hand in hand with the text. As I read the words I pointed out the pictures that went with them and we talked about how we would be able to retell the story easily be only reading the pictures. 

After we finished reading both books we made part of our anchor chart for three ways to read. My anchor chart pieces came from Kim Adsit's Blasting Off With Reader's Workshop unit. We put them on the chart together and read them several times. I explained that we were making the chart to help us remember the three ways we can read a book. 

Tomorrow I plan to use the Kissing Hand to talk about the third way to read a book- retell the story. I also plan to revisit reading a book by looking at the pictures using Have You Seen My Duckling. 






More Than Just "Sound it Out"

I have learned so much about teaching reading from Kimberly Gillow of Funky First Grade Fun and what I learned from her inspired me to read books about teaching reading all summer long. Recently Kimberly asked me to do a guest post on her blog and I was honored.

Pillow Covers Made From Bath Towels

Since I am implementing the daily five this year I am constantly on the lookout for "fun" seating I can add to my classroom. Maybe a Bear Ate It!

I just came across this book and love it for teaching students how to take care of books. I am going to use it as part of one of my first mini-lessons during the Daily Five.
The little monster in the story looses his book and has to look for it everywhere. While searching for his book he thinks of all kinds of things that might have happened to it. 
I love the little monster's excitement over reading!!

Pirate Themed Behavior and Door Signs

Arggghhh... for all of you pirate lovers out there like me...

I just found these cute pirate themed signs for behavior and the door. I think they are the cutest ones I have found. I use a traffic light system and the sayings for the red, yellow, and green signs are perfect for my chart. I also love the simplicity of just making a ring of cards to hang outside my door to tell where we are in when are out.
