A Little Sour Fun....

Yesterday I had a lot of fun using Sarah Cooley's Lemonade Stand unit with a kindergarten class. First, we squeezed lots of lemons for our lemonade.

We started the lesson with a fun lemonade story. The Lemonade Babysitter is one of my favorites.
Since I was not using this activity as a math lesson, I did not include the amounts of the ingredients I needed in our recipe. I tripled Sarah's recipe to make sure we had enough lemonade for everyone.
I found some cute lemonade stand clipart from Goodness & Fun Clipart. The seller is running a special now, buy 2 clipart sets, get 2 free.

We used our recipe to make fresh squeezed lemonade. The kids had a lot of fun making the lemonade. We all got a little sticky. You need lots of sugar!
Then we drank lemonade and ate cookies. I heard lots of slurping going on!!
We finished up with a little interactive writing. I love Sarah's writing prompt activity, "If life gives you lemons..." Since I was limited on time and I was not sure how well kindergartners would understand this saying, I decided to do the activity as a whole group. We talked about what the saying meant. Then we thought about things that could happen to us that would cause us to have a bad day and what we could do to make it better. (In the middle of my lesson, it occurred to me that Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day would have been a perfect book for illustrating the kind of bad things that might happen to them in a day and would have been a great springboard for how they could have turned the situation around for the better.)
If time had permitted, I would have had the students draw pictures to illustrate their ideas. Then I would have displayed their work all around the chart we made.

Check out Sarah's unit and read more about the inspiration behind it in her Lemonade Stand post.

Hi April! I also bought this cute lemonade unit and plan on using it later this month. I love the chart/recipe you made and will check-out the clip art. I also want to find the book you mentioned. It looks like a lot of fun! I have an adorable lemonade stand that I bought years ago at Orchard Supply. I am going to use it and possibly sell lemonade with my kinders to donate the proceeds.
A really "sweet" mini unit! I will be sure to post when I do it too!
