My guided reading tip would be to be organized (I know it's not earth shattering)...have a lesson plan form, a basket or tub for each group, the needed supplies with the group's tub, etc. It makes the lessons go so much smoother and you can get in everything that you need/want to.

I am a newbie to the teaching world (just finished my first "official year"), I have a great little tool to help students remember not to visit me during our guided reading group time. I went to the party store and purchased a FABULOUS necklace. It is bright pink and has FABULOUS written boldly in the center. The necklace would help remind my kiddos that this time is guided reading and they will need to direct all questions to their neighbor.

I keep a table top chart at my reading group table with a couple sets of letter cards arranged in ABC order. It works perfectly for practicing blending, substitution and making words. It's made things so much easier!

Sorry for the extra comments. Somehow my comments were posted twice. During guided reading, I give my students post it notes so they can record new words they come across so we can discuss them later.

My guided reading group tips would be "stay organized" "label everything" "be prepared" and "educate students" many teachers forget to explain the importance of guided reading time (NO INTERRUPTIONS) students need to understand that during this time they are to ask neighbor or buddy any questions not come to you! Staying organiJng,labeling, and being prepared definitely helps a sub if necessary and it keeps you focused and on task no minutes lost "looking for materials"

When I'm at my table doing guided reading, I put a crown on my head. My students know that if I have my crown on that I am working with students and they need to ask 3 before me. I also tell my students that if they ask 3 and those 3 didn't know the answer, then I must have not been clear in my directions.

And a tip or suggestion for a center or guided reading....well, I just finished my first year of teaching and I'm just starting centers this year, so I'm sure you all know more than me. But I'm most excited about having a fine motor skills literacy center - we tend to have a lot of 4 year old kinders, so we need A LOT of practice in this area. Sorting and stringing alpha beads, "sewing" around letters, etc.
Thanks for all your great ideas!!

To help avoid interruptions during guided reading, I instituted a Brag Time. After we are done and all back together, students can brag about how well their classmates worked during center rotations. I made a big deal, the kids started making a big deal, and it became a huge motivator to stay on task. It also helped to reduce the tattling, since the focus became on bragging on others.

My guided reading tip is to stay organized... I have drawers behind my reading table with all my guided reading books (one drawer for each level). Then, each group has a small drawer as well, for keeping specific materials for the lesson--by group.
On the table, I have "marker baskets" which house their materials: dry erase marker, felt for eraser, pencil, magnetic letters, etc. Everything is readily available--and easy to get out and put away!
Have fun!

I love all the new ideas from Leslie and I followed her blog and shops.
My main concern during reading is that the children read a lot! I give them lots of books at their level and when we finish, they keep them in their book box to reread during Read to Self and Partner Reading. This has made a big difference in my kids.
