The Book Whisperer

I just came across a post about a book called The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child. Jaime from What's the Buzz in 1st? says it is a great read.

The Booklist review from Amazon says the following....
Because she couldn’t find a book that showed her how to use her own love of books to imbue her elementary students with the same love, Miller, Teacher Magazine blogger, decided to write her own. She recalls her personal journey as a teacher and the surprise and disappointment of learning that book loving cannot be automatically passed on to students. No more having the whole class read the same novel. She gave her students questionnaires to determine their interests and personally selected stacks of books of possible interest to them, then allowed them to read independently—at least 40 books a school year. She recounts the experience of some students struggling and others exhilarated by the freedom to read. Miller’s tactics resulted in improvement in her students’ vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. She also saw students respect book suggestions that came from a reader’s passion rather than a teacher’s agenda. Miller includes reading lists, activities, questionnaires, and other resources. Although aimed at teachers, this book will also definitely appeal to parents interested in encouraging their children to read. --Vanessa Bush

It definitely sounds like one I need to check out this summer!

Amanda and Her Alligator and Lots of Mo!!

I love Mo Willems. He is one of my favorite children's book authors!! My daughter, Abby, and I got to see him tonight. He read his new book Amanda and Her Alligator and I Broke My Trunk (an Elephant and Piggie story). If you have never seen him in person, he is so funny!

I did a Mo Willems author study with my class last year. We had so much fun with it. If you write Mo, he will write you back and send you a few goodies with his letter. If you want to see more of what we did with our author study, check out Mo Willems: Author Study and Our Hot Dog Party. You can follow Mo's blog through the link on my blog roll.

And for a few great mother's day ideas, check out her Mother's Day Post. The book "My Mom is a Superhero" is my favorite!!

Aliens Are Out of This World!!

If you haven't purchased Deanna's new alien unit, YOU SHOULD!! It is one of my favorites!! The kids love the alien theme. Check out Deanna's Aliens Love Underpants Post for pictures from her class. I taught the alien measurement lesson with a group of kindergartners this week. They had a lot of fun with it. I can't wait to do some of the other lessons.

I had the students work in small groups to measure the aliens. I gave each group a different item to measure their aliens with. After each group was finished, we met back at the carpet to discuss their findings. We talked about why each group measured the same aliens but may have gotten different numbers. This lesson was great for comparing different types of non-standard measure and for talking about why a measurement standard is important.

April Showers Writing

I love this writing idea. It is from Mrs. Morrow's Kindergarten. Check out the rest of her post for lots of great insects ideas too!!
