Polar Express Unit

I put together all of the ideas I have on using the book the Polar Express. I would love feedback. Do the ideas I wrote up make sense? Is there something I should change? Is there something you really like about it? etc. Please look it over, use it, and let me know how I could make it better!!

April, you are FABULOUS! I love this! I can't thank you enough for putting this out there to share. My first grade team and I always do a Polar Express Day, and I know they will be just as excited as I am to have all these fun ideas to go with it. I love love the Polar Express. I set up our "train" in a storage closet and we listen to the recordning. It is dark and a little bit cold in there, so it is perfect for this activity.

In addition to a bell taped under their chairs, I also make them a ticket. I have a parent volunter make hot chocolate while we are gone. The children are amazed! :)

I will be posting a link on my blog to share your wonderful unit.

We were SO excited to see this unit. We are planning our Polar Express Day and were searching for new ideas. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I absolutely love the flow chart. That is perfect for our students.

On our Polar Express Day, the students all wear Pajamas. We have a male teacher on our team. He always dresses like the conductor. He punches each student's train ticket before they begin stations. This year, we will be using some ideas from this packet.
Our favorite part though comes at the end. We purchase a silver bell for each student and tie a nice ribbon. Then each teacher wraps the box of bells with Christmas paper and addresses it to the class. The return address is from the North Pole. When we get to school in the morning, we stick the wrapped boxes in the freezer. At the end of the event we have our custodian deliver the boxes. He usually says that the boxes just appeared in the office or that an elf dropped them off. The students get SO excited when they open the box and find cold silver bells. The look on their faces is just precious!

I had trouble getting it to download - it looked fine on DocStoc but as a pdf all the text is blurred. Know any solution?

Tiffani said...

I had the same problem as ccobb-would love to see it though! Any ideas on why that is happening?

I love the idea about wrapping the bells and freezing them and having them delivered!! What a neat idea!!

I am not sure about the problem with the download. Let me look into it and see what I can figure out.

For those of you who are having trouble downloading the unit, you might want to make sure you have the newest version of Adobe. If this doesn't work, let me know and I will try to think of another possibility for the problem.

I would love to see the full size version of this too but can't get it to download correctly- I did make sure I have the newest adobe reader.

I adore this, but I can't download it either. I can see it, but I can't print or download without the barcode-looking marks on a lot of the text. But from what I can see online, it's an amazing document that is sure to be a wealth of great activities! (Did anyone figure out how to see this without the fuzzy text? I'm registered in docstoc, and had no trouble downloading the rock unit.) Thanks for sharing your wonderful work!

I am not sure why it is working for some and not others- especially if you have the newest version of adobe. If you can't access it, email me, then I will break it into two parts and send it via email.

Thank you SO much for sharing this. As a new teacher, this has made me SO excited for the next couple of weeks of teaching. You are so generous. However, I too, am having trouble downloading anything, and I am only able to read part of the document on this website (the right side of the page is cut off). I would love any tips on how to take full advantage of these wonderful ideas. Thanks again.

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do some research about this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I'm very glad to see such fantastic info being shared freely out there.
